our favorite film of the year Sent: 27 August 2010 Any lover of terry Gilliam, and of films which delve into our dream worlds will be more than happy with this wonderful mise en scene.
The travelling stage set, horse drawn caravan side show steals the scene for theatre lovers.
And of course Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colinn Farrel playing for their deceased friend Heath Ledger adds a very special beauty to the story behind the story.
A film to feed the imagination and tell a tale full of real character which puts most modern shallow productions to shame.
the imaginarium of doctor parnassus Sent: 11 August 2010 Brilliant Terry Gillham as usual directs a very good cast into a brilliant world of fantasy and realisim
Amazing fantasy Sent: 30 July 2010 I loved this film for all the right reasons. Marvellous cast and great story line but most importantly the style.
Use your imagination Sent: 25 July 2010 Since his directorial debut Monty Python And The Holy Grail [DVD] [1974] which he co-directed with Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam has become known for his visually ambitious and often surreal films. From Brazil [1985] [DVD] to Twelve Monkeys [DVD] [1996] he has always managed to attract top acting talent but aside from cult hits such as the brilliant Time Bandits [DVD] [1980] and highly regarded The Fisher King [DVD] [1991], he has never quite managed to hit box-office gold.
Gilliam's latest film is as surreal and imaginative as anything he has made, and with nods to his Python roots (the singing transvestite policemen and the giant stone policeman's helmet are just two examples), plus a raft of great modern character actors such as Colin Farrell, Jude Law, Johnny Depp and the late Heath Ledger, this is a highly entertaining and visually excellent movie. The plot is as offbeat as you would expect - something to do with Christopher Plummer's dissolute Doctor Parnassus engaging in wagers with the devil - played with lewd majesty by Tom Waits - and Ledger's embezzling con artist joining the troupe in order to escape from his creditors, whilst attempting to woo Parnassus' ethereally beautiful daughter. However, you don't watch a Gilliam movie for its coherent plotlines, and in terms of what it sets out to do - namely entertain - this is pretty much a roaring success.
Visually interesting but boring Sent: 18 July 2010 This was a real disappointment. We expected a lot more, especially given all the hype and the excellent cast. But it is imaginative visually.
